Most Manhattan Italian restaurants are open on Monday. The reputation Monday has for being a dead night in New York comes from a real pattern, but it is not the one people plan around: the kitchens that skip Monday are now the exception, and the thing that actually disappears is lunch. Several rooms that serve lunch Tuesday through Friday do not serve it on Monday, which is the trap if you are booking a midday table. Open Monday for lunch and dinner

Isabelle’s Osteria, 245 Park Avenue South, between 19th and 20th. Monday 11:30am to 10pm, one continuous service, so a 3pm table is as available as a 7pm one. The lunch menu runs alongside a bar Aperitivo Hour from 2 to 6pm Monday to Friday, which makes this the easiest Monday afternoon in the Gramercy stretch. It suits a working lunch or an early dinner more than a late one; the kitchen shuts at ten on Mondays.

Via Carota, 51 Grove Street. Monday 11am to 11pm, continuous, with one menu that does not change by time of day. The site states walk-ins are always welcome, which matters more on a Monday than on a Friday. Best suited to anyone who has not booked and does not want to.

L’Artusi, 228 West 10th Street. Lunch Monday to Friday, 12pm to 2:30pm. Dinner Sunday to Thursday, 5pm to 11pm. Both services run Monday, and the lunch menu is a genuinely different document from the dinner one rather than a shortened version of it.

Eataly NYC Flatiron, 200 Fifth Avenue. The market floor runs daily 7am to 11pm. Of the sit-down restaurants, La Pizza & La Pasta runs daily 11am to 10:30pm, Il Pesce and Il Pastaio di Eataly daily 11am to 10pm, and Bar Milano daily 12pm to 10pm. Nothing here closes on Monday. Rezdôra, 27 East 20th Street. Monday 5pm to 11pm. This is the clearest illustration of the Monday lunch problem: the kitchen serves lunch from noon Tuesday through Friday and does not on Monday. If you were planning a Monday pasta lunch in the Flatiron, this is the room you would most likely have picked and the one that would have turned you away.

Osteria 57, 57 West 10th Street. Dinner Sunday to Wednesday 5pm to 10pm, Thursday to Saturday until 10:30pm. Dinner only every day, so Monday is not a special case here. Note the address, which is widely misreported elsewhere; 57 West 10th is the one the restaurant publishes.

Two names to cross off

Maialino is closed. Its own site carries the notice: “Maialino has closed its doors at The Redbury Hotel.” No reopening date is published, and its sister restaurant Marta posts an identical notice. If a list somewhere still sends you to Maialino for a Gramercy Monday, that list is out of date.

Bar Primi on the Bowery is temporarily closed. The restaurant’s own location page reads: “We are temporarily closed for light renovations. We look forward to welcoming you back soon!” No reopening date is given. The hours still displayed on that page apply to a room that is not currently serving.

Both are worth knowing because they are exactly the kind of name that survives in older recommendations. Checking a restaurant’s own site before you walk is the whole discipline, and it is the same habit behind how New Yorkers actually pick a restaurant.

The Monday rule that actually helps

Sort by service, not by day. A restaurant’s weekly hours page will tell you it is open Monday, and that is usually true. What it will not tell you in a headline is that Monday is the day the lunch block is missing, because the information is buried in a line like “Tuesday–Friday 12:00 pm – 2:30 pm” that you have to read carefully to notice excludes Monday.

Three questions cover it:

• Does the hours page list Monday separately from the rest of the week? If yes, Monday is different, and the difference is almost always lunch.
• Is there one continuous block or two? A single block from late morning to close means you can walk in at an odd hour.
• Is the closing time earlier on Monday? Several kitchens run a shorter Monday, which changes how late you can be seated rather than whether you get in.
